A netbook or laptop can be appropriate for a fifth grader. You can require your child to use it in a shared room and leave it there overnight, even if it’s their own computer.

I’d use it as a chance to teach responsible habits:

- Agree on rules for homework, games, downloads, and when to put the computer away.
- Use parental controls alongside conversations and supervision.
- Teach your child to protect personal information and tell an adult if something online makes them uncomfortable.
- Spend time using it together. Take an interest in what they’re learning as you supervise.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a [family media plan](https://www.healthychildren.org/English/family-life/Media/Pages/How-to-Make-a-Family-Media-Use-Plan.aspx) with agreed boundaries and parental controls, including for school devices.

I’d also ask the school what the laptop is for, which safeguards work at home, and who handles repairs. My bigger concern is the reward policy. If laptops help children learn, students who struggle with homework may need that help too. I understand rewarding effort, but I’d consider access to a useful learning tool separately.
