Two to five hours a day is more than I’d recommend for a 3-year-old, even with educational apps. I’d aim for no more than about an hour a day. The World Health Organization recommends that limit for sedentary screen time at ages 3 to 4, including computer games, and makes no exception for educational content. Going over an hour doesn’t mean harm suddenly starts; it’s a guideline. [WHO guidance](https://www.who.int/news/item/24-04-2019-to-grow-up-healthy-children-need-to-sit-less-and-play-more)

It’s reassuring that she still enjoys friends, outdoor play, blocks and books. Still, it helps to look at how much time the iPad takes away from those activities. The American Academy of Pediatrics’ preschool guidance asks parents to consider what media crowds out, including conversation, movement, imaginative play and shared reading. It also advises against unrestricted access to a tablet. She may be learning from the apps, and you can set limits while keeping those benefits. You don’t need to wait for an obvious problem. I’d replace unlimited access with short sessions at predictable times, working toward roughly an hour total each day. As you make the change, watch for:

- Less conversation, physical play, time with friends or shared reading.
- Later bedtimes or less sleep. Children this age generally need 10 to 13 hours of sleep a day, including naps. [WHO guidance](https://www.who.int/news/item/24-04-2019-to-grow-up-healthy-children-need-to-sit-less-and-play-more)
- More frequent demands for the tablet, or needing it whenever she’s bored or upset. Occasional disappointment when a session ends is different from a persistent pattern.

Spend some of that screen time together. Talk about the story or count objects, then try a related activity away from the screen. The AAP encourages parents to discuss media with their children and connect it to everyday activities.
