**Use a masking-tape hinge and peel the backing a little at a time. Prepare the plywood first:** sign vinyl needs a smooth, clean, nonporous surface. Sand and remove the dust, then apply a suitable gloss or semi-gloss coating and let it fully cure according to its instructions. Bare plywood’s texture can show through the vinyl and impair adhesion. For the application:

1. **Lay the shelf flat.** Cut the vinyl slightly oversize so you can trim it after applying.
2. **Position it with all the backing attached.** Tape it temporarily in place, then run masking tape along one entire edge, bridging the vinyl and shelf. This forms a hinge that preserves your alignment. On a long, narrow shelf, hinging a short edge gives you a manageable width to work across.
3. **Flip the sheet back on the hinge.** Peel back a small section of backing nearest the hinge and fold the backing underneath.
4. **Hold the loose vinyl slightly above the shelf.** Keep it gently taut; avoid stretching it. A helper makes this easier on a large sheet.
5. **Squeegee from the hinge outward**, using firm, overlapping strokes from the middle toward each side. Advance across the exposed section gradually. The squeegee should control where the adhesive first touches the shelf.
6. **Pull out another small section of backing and repeat.** Keep the backing close behind the area you are applying.
7. Remove the hinge tape, press down the edges and trim the excess.

Use a clean, felt-edged vinyl squeegee to protect the gloss. If a wrinkle starts, stop and gently lift the affected area while it can still release, then apply it again. For an isolated trapped bubble, a fine needle hole lets you press the air out; a folded crease needs lifting and reapplication.

**Avoid wet application on bare plywood.** Water-and-detergent application is an option only when the particular vinyl permits it and the surface is smooth and nonporous. [ORAFOL’s wet-application guidance](https://www.orafol.com/en/americas/support)
